WHEN did you start working with Thizz? I’m from San Francisco. There’s Town Thizz and Thizz City—I’m Thizz City. I started messin with them in 2007. My group had a song on the radio called “Get It”. That’s when we started messin with Stretch and them. I have a group with Lil 4 Tay, that’s Rappin’ 4 Tay’s daughter, and I also do my solo thing. Do you have any CD’s released already? We got a mixtape that’s online that was hosted by Mistah F.A.B. called “Bitch I Go Vol 1”. That’s all we got on the market right now. I got another mixtape comin out called “Buckets of Booty”. That’s should be big, they’re already playin a song from it on the radio. Are there a lot of artists signed to Thizz City? Thizz City hasn’t officially launched. It’s gonna launch next year. So I’m doing shit with Town Thizz now, cause we’re all family. The first Thizz city CD is gonna come out next year. Messy Marv is gonna host it. How would you describe your sound? If I were to describe my style in one word I’d say my style is Mango. Like the fruit. That’s how we describe what we’re doing. We call it mango cause that’s basically the way we carry ourselves. It’s our attitude. We’re not Hyphy, we’re Mango. My sound is really natural like the mango. If anybody says that they’re doing themselves—man, a lotta people are not. They just copy what other people do. My music is just me lettin it out from within. My whole vibe is different from anybody else. I wouldn’t clas- sify it as a Frisco sound. It’s really a Roach Gigz sound. If it’s based in a place then I would say Planet Roach. My voice is different, the way I deliver is different, it’s just gonna pull you in when you hear it. Do you make your own beats? I make beats and I also get beats from different producers like D-Lo, Swerve and a buncha guys. If they slap I’ll lay something down to it. That’s been workin so far. At first I was making all my own beats, and I still make some of my own beats. What kind of beats do you gravitate toward? The beats I make could work in the club, it could
TOWN THIZZNESS
be a dance beat. But you could put it in the car
and it’s a beat you could ride to. Or you could
play it with your lady and it’s still gonna work.
They’re beats that can go anywhere. Kinda like
how Mac Dre did it. He had beats that were just
weird, something you never heard but they will
work anywhere you played them.
What do you think about all the websites and
MySpace’s. Is it helping the music or hurting it?
In a way it’s a good thing because a lot of artists
who were not able to put themselves out there
for the world to see now have a way to do that.
But at the same time there’s a whole bunch of
bullshit weak-ass artists that are puttin up this
music and they really suck. They really need to
stop rappin. So it gets a little cloudy because
people don’t know how to separate the good
artists from the bullshit. It’s good and bad. It’s
promotion for independent artists and it’s a
way for the whole world to see ‘em, but at the
same time it gets too crowded with garbage.
Sometimes where there’s so much you lose
interest in something.
Yeah. It’s like music is flowing like water right
now. It’s up to the artists to adjust to that and
stand out from everybody else. I’m tryin to
shine for the whole Bay. I’m gonna be one of
those faces that people recognize. I’m not just
a Bay Area rapper, I’m a rapper from the Bay
and I’m doing it big.
