1970 During his time at Wrekin College as an English-Speaking UnionScholar, Lee Carter ’70 (front row, second fromright) was a member of the 1st XV rugby team.This achievement was recently highlighted in thealumni newsletter published by Wrekin. CurrentlyMr. Carter lives in Blowing Rock, North Carolina,to “enjoy the dessert phase of life.” 1
1973 Hobie Claiborne ’73 has completed a nine-year term onthe board of governors of St. Catherine’s School,including the past two years as chairman of theboard. Hobie also is celebrating his thirty-secondyear with Carpenter Co., one of the world’s largestmanufacturers of polyurethane and polyesterfibers. He lives in Richmond, Virginia, withhis daughter, Maria, a senior at Episcopal HighSchool, and his son, Hobie, a seventh grader at St.Christopher’s School.
Two Woodberry alumni and two Episcopalalumni met in Telluride, Colorado, for a skiingtrip in February. 1976 Members of the class of 1976 held a reunion last fall at Unicoi StatePark in the north Georgia mountains. Thosepresent were Jeff Smith, Will Steele, GaryMcClure, Dave Roberts, David Dorsey, TomArmstrong, and their wives. The class willcelebrate its forty-fifth reunion in April 2021. 3
1980 Jamie Smith ’80 and his brother, Stephen Smith ’84, movedhome to Merigold, Mississippi, to transition frompartners to owners of McCarty’s Pottery. Sincemoving back home to take over the business, Jamienotes that, growing up, he and his brother “playedin the mud for fun, and now we get to do it for aliving.” Jamie’s eldest daughter, Sarah Bennett,will be attending the University of Mississippi inthe fall.
1988 While visiting Easter Island in July 2019, Kirk Pumphrey ’88ran into Edgar “Papi” Soudek, former WoodberrySpanish teacher and soccer coach. The tworeminisced about their days at Woodberry on theisland in the Pacific Ocean. 4
